UNESCO reconhece CETIC do NICBr como Centro Regional de Estudos de TIC

UNESCO Director-General Irina Bokova and the Ambassador and Permanent Delegate of Brazil to UNESCO Maria Laura da Rocha, signed an agreement on 28 March for the establishment of a Regional Centre of Studies for the Development of the Information Society as a category 2 Centre under the auspices of UNESCO.

The Centre, established in Sao Paolo (Brazil), will support Latin America and Portuguese-speaking African countries with studies on the progress and impact of building inclusive knowledge societies through information and communication.

“This is a timely and relevant partnership, as it falls within UNESCO’s mandate of building pluralistic and inclusive knowledge societies,” said the Director-General. “This Centre will provide a platform to monitor progress in achieving the World Summit on Information Society (WSIS) goals,” said the Director-General, highlighting the importance of the Centre for South-South cooperation and its contribution to sustainable development.

“This new Centre will become a centre of reference for capacity-building, research and networking of specialists in developing countries,” said the Ambassador. “It will also contribute to UNESCO’s programmes to support the creation, access, preservation and sharing of information and knowledge”.

In addition to the Ambassador and members of the Delegation, this ceremony took place in the presence the Chairman of the Administrative Board of the Brazilian Network Information Centre (NIC) Antônio Alberto Tavares and the Manager of the Centre of Studies on Information and Communication Technologies (CETIC) Alexandre Fernandes Barbosa.
